We are very proud to be able to put out the flags on your behalf to show respect for our country, veterans, servicemen and -women. The Kiwanis Club of Ashland is responsible for putting out approximately 300 flags on 12 holidays during the year, weather permitting. This is no small task for a few volunteers. We contract with local merchants and individuals throughout the city to put out the flags for $30 a year, which seems fairly inexpensive. The proceeds are used for charitable purposes, except for a small portion that is needed for flag maintenance and replacement of stolen or old flags. We display flags on Siskiyou Boulevard light fixtures as our contribution to the community. The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has been putting out the flags for over 20 years. Prior to that, it was the local Jaycees who put out the flags. We have a very small storage area for our flags. It was learned many years ago that when our flags got wet, we had a very big problem on our hands as we have no place of our own to dry them and 300 flags are not easily dismantled. We cannot leave the flags out overnight as they would not be properly lighted and it is likely many would come up missing. Therefore, we decided to offer our services only on those holidays when the weather could be reasonably predicted not to be wet. A typical flag day takes at least 12 people to put up and take down the flags. As with many service clubs, our members are dwindling, and are now at their lowest point in recent memory, approximately 25. Many of our members have been with us for at least 10 years or more. Some of our members are aging and/or working and not available for flags, and some are only available for certain projects. We get help occasionally from Kiwanis Key Club members (High School girls and boys).
