Since April 2013, owners Doug and Becky Neuman, together with their partners Mike and Laura Naumes, and with the support of the Neuman Hotel Group, have been renovating this largest hotel and conference-banquet event space in Southern Oregon. The nearest larger space is at Seven Feathers Casino Resort, 82 miles north in Canyonville. Formerly known as Windmill Inn, when fully completed the Ashland Hills will boast over 230 guest rooms and suites and over 10,000 square feet of banquet space that can accommodate events up to 700 people. Windmill Inns of America paid $5.4 million for the Ashland property in 1995. In 2007, all of the original two- and three-story buildings, which housed 160 guest rooms and a banquet space for 700 people, were closed. It opened in 1978 as Ashland Hills and at its heyday was valued at $10.6 million. According to public records, the Neumans and a partner paid $1.6 million for the 14-acre resort property at 2525 Ashland St., just east of Interstate 5 exit 14. The Ashland couple owns the Neuman Hotel Group, which includes Larks Restaurant, the Waterstone Spa, the Ashland Springs Hotel, Lithia Springs Resort and the Inn at the Commons, formerly the Red Lion Hotel, in Medford. When they bought the property in April 2013, the Neumans said they planned to invest up to $6 million renovating the rooms, restaurant, lounge, meeting spaces and gardens, and hire 100 people to work in management, food and banquet service, housekeeping and groundskeeping. “Our hope is to become a favorite stop over, a family resort on I-5,” Becky Neuman said in a media release. “By staying at the hotel guests will get a feel for the essence of the region and will want to spend more time exploring Southern Oregon. This is going to be a gateway to all things Oregon.” Local business leaders have expressed their hopes the large convention center will benefit all of Southern Oregon and bring a boost of vitality and life to the region.
