Ashland is grateful to have a fire chief who is constantly working to prevent and prepare our community for fire-related disasters. Our fire chief goes above and beyond his responsibilities and for that, the Ashland Chamber recognized him with the prestigious Honorary Life Member award. Each year, at the Ashland Chamber’s annual dinner, the chamber recognizes individuals and businesses who have given generously of themselves for the betterment of our community and chamber through the awards program. In the past, people such as Jac Nickels, Bob Rasmussen, Dennis Slattery, Allen Drescher, Senora Chela, Rick Nagel and Jim Teece, along with many others who have made and continue to shape Ashland in so many positive ways, have been recognized as Honorary Life Members. For the 2015-2016 year, the Ashland Chamber recognized Ashland Fire Chief John Karns. When he moved to Ashland, the first thing he did was to come to the chamber and ask how he could help and how we could work together to improve the safety and well-being of Ashland. He didn’t need to be convinced that collaboration was important — he already lived it. While pointing out areas that he saw as weaknesses in our structure and plans, he also offered ideas and solutions — opportunities to educate, engage and create community strength. Looking at our vulnerabilities but collaborating to work to mitigate them with a positive outlook made us all want to do what we could to help tackle these challenges together. While we recognize it is the chief’s job to care for and protect our community, whether serving as a first-responder, developing emergency preparedness planning or working with the partners on the Ashland Forest Resiliency Project, it is our opinion that Fire Chief John Karns goes above and beyond his role, even stepping in as Santa Claus for the Ashland Chamber’s first-ever Holiday Open House in December 2015. Currently, under the chief’s leadership, Ashland Fire & Rescue is working on the second annual “Ashland Is Ready” event and a Wildfire Summit, both in September of this year. The Honorary Life Member award is given at the Ashland Chamber Annual Dinner in the fall. The 2016 event will be on Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Historic Ashland Armory. The Ashland Chamber recognizes individuals for their service and commitment to our community and also recognizes businesses for their accomplishments.
