You don’t have to be a child to enjoy this film, which is based on the long-running Nickelodeon show “SpongeBob SquarePants.” You don’t have to be an adult either — you just have to be a little loopy. This is the type of film that hippies from the 1960s would have embraced with open arms. What else can you say about a film where a character enters another’s brain and finds it swimming with unabashed rosiness? Or about a film with a time-travel component featuring an intellectually advanced dolphin, which oversees the alignment of the planets and pontificates in between uncontrollable cackles? Or a film that takes delight in painful puns and vaudevillian sight gags? This is a movie that mixes surrealism with goofiness that produces, in all honesty, some mixed results, kind of like mixed nuts. Everyone loves almonds, but who wants filberts? Many children adore poop jokes, and this film has defecating seagulls to please this demographic, but such scatological shenanigans only detract from a film that so wildly paints its anarchic streak. Characters garbed in leather seething with rage in an apocalyptic world straight of “Mad Max”? You bet. This is not “Barney’s Great Adventure.” Even when “Out of Water” switches from animation to live-action, where the characters become CG-rendered superheroes scampering about in so-so 3-D — yet another nod to the urchins in the audience — the film maintains its inspired wackiness. In one scene, characters overdose on cotton candy and go on a psychedelic sugar high followed by the inevitable crash. For those unfamiliar with the TV show and who didn’t see the 2004 movie, fear not. You don’t have to know a SpongeBob from a Raggedy Ann to appreciate the loony tunes playing on this jukebox. The eternally optimistic SpongeBob SquarePants (voice of Tom Kenny) lives in Bikini Bottom (yes, that’s its name) where he works at the Krusty Krab for the avaricious Mr. Krabs (voice of Clancy Brown) making the incredibly popular Krabby Patties. Archenemy — or is that arch-anemone? — Plankton (voice of Mr. Lawrence) wants to steal the secret recipe and sell the patties at his restaurant. In one attack on the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob try to thwart the rampaging Plankton. “Unleash the condiments!’ Krabs commands. “With relish,” responds SpongeBob. Cringe. At least the film has the decency to employ a band called the Bad Punz. Anyway, just as it looks like Plankton may steal the recipe, it mysteriously disappears. An angry mob doesn’t believe Plankton when he tells them he doesn’t have the recipe, and when SpongeBob sticks up for Plankton, the rabble turns on him, too. The two flee and must find out what happened to the recipe before they meet an unseemly fate. The plot is purposefully simple, ideal for children and perfect for giving the filmmakers — directors Paul Tibbitt and Mike Mitchell and screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger – an excuse to go off on bizarre tangents. These include entering the aforementioned live-action sequences where the SpongeBob and gang do battle with Burger Beard (a very game Antonio Banderas), a pirate who has a habit of stealing things. Now isn’t that just like a pirate? During all this lunacy, SpongeBob gets play straight sponge to a cast of crazies that includes Squidward the curmudgeon (voice of Roger Bumpass), Patrick the simpleton starfish (voice of Bill Fagerbakke) and Sandy the scientist squirrel (voice of Carolyn Lawrence). The film does take time to impart a lesson on the importance of teamwork, a word so anathematic to Plankton that he can’t even pronounce it. What’s great about “SpongeBob” is that it doesn’t force-feed this lesson. Like Cyndi Lauper’s girls, it just wants to have fun, and fun it has. Cue the cackling dolphin. “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge out Water” is rated PG and 92 minutes long. Directed by Paul Tibbitt and Mike Mitchell, it stars Antonio Banderas and features the voices of Tom Kenney, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Mr. Lawrence and Carolyn Lawrence. Grade: B.
