Festivities at Sumner Parker Field, 403 Dead Indian Memorial Road, will begin with breakfast at about 8 a.m., followed by flights, aviation and ground displays and a lunch wagon, said Bob Skinner, owner of Skinner Aviation, the fixed-base operator in Ashland. “We just like the community to be able to see the airport and get a little bit of an idea of what we contribute to the community … and economically how important it is,” Skinner said. Something most folks might not know, he said, is the on foggy days in Medford, UPS and FedEx aircraft use Ashland’s landing strip to bring freight into the Rogue Valley. “There is a lot that goes on out here that I think the community doesn’t realize,” Skinner said. For Airport Day, there is no admission fee and the afternoon should begin to wrap up by about 3 p.m., Skinner said. Breakfast will cost $6 and rides in Skinner Aviation aircraft will cost $30 for children and $35 for adults, he said. The celebration, which is organized by the city’s Airport Commission, Skinner Aviation and Brim Aviation, as well as other airport patrons, has been held in Ashland on a non-annual basis for the last 20 years, Skinner said. Last year was the celebration’s comeback from a few-year hiatus, he said. He expects 20-30 additional aircraft to fly into Ashland for the May 16 show, where they will join about 85 aircraft that the airport currently houses. Last year, about 350 people showed up, but as many as 700 have flocked to the airport to see the spectacle, he said. Skinner said, he will have three or four airplanes on the ready for public flights, but “most people just wander around and look at the airplanes.” “It’s a good way to get out and have a little fun,” he said.
