Keeping the Grizzlies there has proven to be almost impossible. The Grizzlies pulled out their third dramatic comeback in the last two weeks Tuesday, storming back from a two-sets-to-one deficit to stymie Crater in a Midwestern League barnburner Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym. The visiting Comets lambasted the Grizzlies in the third set to take charge and appeared ready to deliver the home team a painful homecoming-week setback before Ashland rallied for a 25-27, 25-22, 12-25, 25-18, 15-13 victory. “For the last five points every point was back and forth, so it was really tight,” Ashland coach Robin Akpan said. “It was a good matchup for both teams. They have some strong hitters, some strong blockers and so it was exciting. It was a loud gym and it was really intense.” The win improved the first-place Grizzlies to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the MWL, while Crater fell to 9-2 and 3-1. Jordan Tilley had 33 assists, six kills and six key aces, Hope Baldrica 13 kills and eight blocks and Grace Lenthe 10 kills and one ace for the Grizzlies. Ocean Lumbreras added five blocks and two kills and Ellie Case five kills and four blocks. Things looked dire for Ashland after Crater’s dominant performance in the third set, but Ashland gathered itself before taking the court again and hatched a plan. “Going into the fourth set we were like, ‘Hey, now’s the time to do it,’” Akpan said. “They focused back in on their serve receive and that’s when Jordan Tilley went after them.” Tilley used a blistering serve to help the Grizzlies take charge early in the fourth game and they were able to pull away to force a fifth set. There, a key block by Baldrica and another key block by Case on the outside – against Crater’s powerful outside hitter Kelsey Strouse — help the Grizzlies get in position to win. A ball-control error on match point clinched it for Ashland, which also pulled out comeback wins against Phoenix and Grants Pass. “I was really proud about how the girls kept their composure in that fifth set,” Akpan said. Akpan said Tilley’s leadership was key, especially after Crater cruised through the third set. “Jordan Tilley is a leader on our floor; she’s quite a competitor,” Akpan said. “It’s good to have intense spirit on the floor, especially in tight matches. “And I gotta say, Crater’s a strong team and they don’t back off. They keep going hard the whole time. It was a fun match to play.” Girls Soccer Jessica Harrower scored three goals, Faci Graham two and freshmen Mya Elder Hammond added a goal and two assists as Ashland continued to impress with a 7-0 nonleague win over Crater on Tuesday at North Mountain Park. The Grizzlies (5-1-1) have four wins and a tie in their last five games and have outscored their opponents 29-3. “We had some great passing and had some great individual skill,” Ashland coach Eric Wolff said. “It’s tough to defend us right now when we play like that. And then Crater likes to play that really high defense and my girls figured out how to beat the outside trap.” Graham, a senior striker, gave Ashland a quick two-goal lead when she struck off a throw-in in the third minute and again off an assist by Elder Hammond in the 12th. Samantha Lilley scored six minutes later off an assist by Elder Hammond, and Harrower notched her first goal in the 32nd off an assist by Lilly Patton. Harrower added to the blowout with goals in the 43rd and 46th, both assisted by Ianthe Balbuena-Nedrow. Elder Hammond completed the scoring in the 48th when she corralled a loose ball in the box and kicked it in. “(Balbuena-Nedrow) and (Elder Hammond) did a great job dictating that midfield,” Wolff said. “My girls were faster than Crater’s girls, but we were passing so well that it made us look like we were playing at a faster level and that was mainly thanks to Mya and Ia.” Boys Soccer At Central Point, Crater struck first but Ashland recovered in plenty of time to win going away, 5-1, in a nonleague game Tuesday at Dutch Meyer Field. The win was the Grizzlies’ third in a row after an 0-3 start. “We didn’t play much possession ball in the first half,” Ashland coach Brian Roupp said, “but in the second half we passed the ball well, they supported each other, we got more aggressive and just decided to take (control).” The Grizzlies didn’t wait until the second half to take control of the scoreboard, however. After Crater scored first in the fourth minute, Ashland tied the game in the ninth when Graycen Kennedy sent a nice pass behind the defense that Lars Filson ran down and booted past the keeper. Ashland took the lead for good right before the half when freshman Ben Lucero connected on a direct kick from 22 yards away. The Grizzlies took charge in the second half, when Lucero tallied his second goal in the 54th and Bryce Rollins and Lucas Golding tacked on insurance goals in the 67th and 74th, respectively. Lucero’s second goal was assisted by Kennedy, while Rollins scored on a breakaway and Golding took advantage of a two-man break. After a lackluster start that saw the Grizzlies tally only one goal in their first three games, they’ve scored 10 in their last three. “The players are really starting to grow at their positions and we’re starting to play possessions and create scorning opportunities,” Roupp said. “The team has been working on passing and they’re starting to pass so much better and have confidence on the ball.
