--> --> Salem carousel restored just in time for holidays SALEM (AP) - After giving 175,000 rides, the horses on the Riverfront Carousel are getting their first break this week. They're getting fresh coats of polyurethane varnish, Rosinante's wooden mane is being fixed and Little Joe's missing ear is being glued back on. Geoff Theurer, a carousel volunteer, said the 43 hand-carved animals have held up remarkably well during their first six months of operation in downtown Salem. "The horses are built to take the weight," Theurer said Monday. Dozens of volunteers are working through Wednesday to get the carousel ready for its first holiday season. They're lubricating machinery and adding extra lights to the canopy. Several volunteer carvers also are creating a wooden replica of a Panamanian tree frog to donate to a carousel in Tacoma, Wash. Theurer said the gift follows a tradition started by carousel carvers in Missoula, Mont., who donated the horse Big Sky to Salem. Email your...
