Washington had 21 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Raiders past the Coyotes, 84-73. Denise Baratta | Ashland Daily Tidings "We won because we did a lot of things right," said head-coach Brian McDermott. "We shot 13-for-22 from the 3-point line. That's something that will help you win games." The Raiders (10-7 overall, 7-2 Cascade) shot 52 percent from the floor in a game in which physical post play resulted in several open looks from the 3-point arc and a lot of trips to the free throw line. Forward Shea Washington picked up 16 rebounds and led SOU with 21 points en route to his 10th double-double of the year. "It makes things easy when you play defense and rebound the ball well," McDermott said. "Shea made things a lot easier for us by getting in there and rebounding." Southern dominated for the majority of the game, and while the Coyotes managed to keep the score close, they only took the lead twice, and both leads were brief. Each time Albertson began to get its offense going, SOU would gain momentum again and come up big on the other end. Albertson gained largest lead of the game, 25-23, with 6:50 remaining in the first half of play. Southern quickly recovered behind Washington's 16 first-half points, and entered halftime leading 42-38. Southern again found itself trailing with 9:30 left in the second half after squandering a 10-point lead. Southern's Brad Coen took back control by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers and sparking an 11-0 run for the Raiders. Coen finished with 18 points and four assists. "We played really well all-around," McDermott said. "Our bench really produced." The Southern bench scored 23 points. Freshman guard Matt Cowell came up big as the Raiders' sixth-man off the bench, adding 11 points, including two 3-pointers of his own in the final minutes of play to help bury the Coyotes. Cowell was almost flawless from the floor. He hit 4 of 5 shots, including three from beyond the arc. Steve Farley and Travis Elam also made significant contributions to the Raiders' cause. Farley scored 15 points and dished out eight assists while Elam shot 3-for-4 off the bench to finish with six points. "You cant give this win to just one player," McDermott said. "We had so many guys perform. Farley did well all around. Cowell was big for us off the bench. Coen held Albertson's leading scorer to just two points. It was a good effort all around." The Raider men will face another nationally ranked opponent again this Friday when Western Baptist comes to town. Southern dropped its first meeting with Western Baptist, 94-67, in Salem. "They were quite a bit better than us then," McDermott said. "But that was then and this is now. We are playing a lot better basketball now."
