In Medford this evening, as part of a five-city tour, Kroger, a former U.S. Marine and political neophyte, will appear at 5 p.m. at the Jackson County Democratic Headquarters, 40 S. Central, to announce his candidacy locally. Kroger, who teaches criminal law at Lewis & Clark College's Northwestern School of Law, has worked on such high profile criminal cases as the Enron accounting scandal and has prosecuted Mafia bosses. Among his stated priorities: fight meth aggressively, hold polluters responsible, collect child support on behalf of single parents, protect Oregonians from scams and defend a woman's right to choose. "We need a tough, experienced attorney general who will fight aggressively to protect our citizens in court," Kroger said in a statement. "I will target Oregon's meth dealers, fight to protect consumers, and make polluters pay for the harm they cause." Attorney General Hardy Myers, 68, citing his age, previously announced that he will not seek a fourth term after serving as the state's top cop since 1996, overseeing the state Department of Justice with more than 1,300 employees and a $380 million budget. Rep. Greg Macpherson, D-Lake Oswego, a third-term state lawmaker whose father and grandfather served in the Oregon Legislature, has also announced he will seek the post. Macpherson, vice chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, says he is running to "defend laws that protect freedom of choice, personal privacy, and the right to die with dignity; and guard Oregon's unique natural treasures."
