Paul got the terminal diagnosis Monday, October 20, brother Tom was with him from Thursday to Sunday. Sister Mary from Saturday to his death on Friday. Although a recluse in his last years, he leaves many friends from an active life filled with fun. Born to Walter and Dorothy Bernarde in Eugene in 1954 he moved to the Rogue Valley on his third birthday and lived his whole life here enjoying its many pleasures; fishing, hunting, rafting, camping, trapshooting, golf, and all sports. He worked in the plywood industry for 35 years. He was a good friend, a loyal worker, an animal lover, and a long-time fan of The Ducks and The Chargers. He loved music, especially Jerry Jeff Walker, Townes Van Zant, Guy Clark, and The Eagles. A celebration of his life is planned for 11:00 a.m. Sunday November 9, 2014 at Miguel's Restaurant in Shady Cove. Those who attend are encouraged to wear gear involved in what they loved to do with Paul such as sports jerseys, fishing gear, camo, beer tee-shirts, etc. After the celebration, we'll all have a beer on Paul and his ashes will be scattered in the Rogue River. He was preceded in death by by parents, Walt and Dorothy. He leaves his brother, Tom (Tonya) Hersant; sister, Mary (Ken) Droscher; nieces, Erica Ray and Kristin Hersant; nephews, Brent Hersant and Travis Bessonette; great-niece, Sadie Rose Hersant; and great-nephews, Alex and Austin Ray. If desired, contributions in his name can be made to the Jackson County Humane Society for all the cats and dogs he loved so dearly and to atone for all the fish, deer, elk, and varmints he killed.
