For the second year in a row and fifth time in the last eight years the Grizzlies placed first to capture the Sato Cup at the Oregon Interscholastic Snowboard Association state championships, which wrapped up Saturday at Mt. Bachelor in Bend. The Grizzlies, whose roster includes only two seniors, had two top-five placers in the banked slalom, one in the halfpipe and one in slopestyle and also produced the best team scores in both the banked slalom and halfpipe. The impressive showing was capped when the final results were announced Saturday night in the Great Room at Sunriver Resort. “We had a pretty good idea (that we won) because you can just add up the points along the way,” Ashland coach Matt Faurot said. “They really felt a sense of accomplishment that they had achieves something. And it felt great for them to do it back to back on a year where, yet again, we were open and closed (at Mount Ashland) and needing to travel to train. “The coaches and parents felt so proud of the boys, about how they stuck together and really grew as a team.” The Ashland High girls also competed at state and were led there by senior Posa Tratensek-Contor, who placed sixth in slopestyle and 12th in the halfpipe. Tratensek-Contor’s younger brother, sophomore Che Tratensek-Contor, was the top performer for the Grizz boys, although Ashland also received clutch performances from junior Lars Filson, senior Foster Thomas and sophomore Joviel Gallagher. Che Tratensek-Contor placed third in the banked slalom, third in slopestyle and fifth in the halfpipe to rack up major points for the Grizzlies. In the banked slalom he crossed the finish line in 36.14 seconds, less than a second behind winner Parker Busch of LaSalle and runner-up Filson. “It became obvious that our boys were riding really well after the very first day because on the banked slalom we racked up about 500 more points than the next-best team,” Faurot said. “And knowing that, we knew that the other teams would need to catch us in the next two team events.” Thanks to Tratensek-Contor and company, that didn’t happen. In the slopestyle competition, Tratensek-Contor earned a 281 score from the three judges on his second run to edge Sandy’s Jeremy Cansler (276). Thomas Previs of Wilsonville won the event with a 313. In the halfpipe, the judges gave Tratensek-Contor a score of 244 for each of his runs, just behind fourth-place finisher James Mitchell-Hart (245) of Lincoln. Previs won the halfpipe as well, scoring a 295. “That was definitely a big deal for (Tratensek-Contor),” Faurot said. “We knew he had that potential but for him to place so high in the speed events as well as the freestyle events was a pretty satisfying feeling for him. …He has a great crew of friends around him and they are constantly pushing each other, and going out and having fun translates into positive finishes.” Filson barely missed taking the banked slalom title and also advanced to the semifinals of the snowboard-cross and finished 14th in slopestyle. He scored a 252 in slopestyle and also placed 20th in the halfpipe. Thomas placed sixth in slopestyle with a 269 and 27th in the halfpipe. His best score in the halfpipe was 188. “It was a real breakout performance for (Thomas),” Faurot said. “We knew that he had that in him. We were kind of waiting for it to be released and he chose the right time to really step up.” Faurot said Thomas’ most impressive trick was a backside 360, during which he drifted from right to left about 50 feet. Gallagher was seventh in the halfpipe (236) and 26th in slopestyle (233). Also for the AHS boys, sophomore Micah Bylsma placed ninth in the halfpipe (229) and 21st in slopestyle (242).
