The first encounter between Guanajuato and Ashland players was in March of this year in Mexico. “The idea of the Sister City Classic had been bandied about for several years before, but I was successful in engaging the key people on both sides of the border to make it happen,” City Councilor Rich Rosenthal said in an email exchange. “David Johnson, last year’s Ashland Little League president, and (Guanajuato Little League President) Armando Preciado are the folks who did the heavy lifting.” Rosenthal, the city of Ashland’s liaison with the Amigo Club, has visited Guanajuato several times, including as an official city of Ashland representative at Guanajuato’s major summer festival in 2014. Preciado’s team of 12- and 13-year-olds will arrive on July 22 to compete with teams from Ashland, Medford, Eagle Point and Grants Pass. Rosenthal and Johnson are working with the Ashland Little League and middle-school baseball programs to form teams for the games at Hunter Park in Ashland or at the U.S. Cellular Community Park in Medford. “Preciado was instrumental in arranging a memorable week” last March for the Ashland team coached by Steve Rice and Michael Nixon, Rosenthal said. Many of the players and families will reunite in Ashland. “After hearing about the incredible hospitality and life experience of last year’s team, there is already broad interest from many Little Leaguers and their parents wanting to be a part of the 2017 travel team (to Guanajuato),” Rosenthal said. In a letter written to help obtain visas for the visitors, Mayor John Stromberg said that “Ashland proudly played in the inaugural Sister City Classic in Guanajuato,” against teams in Guanajuato, Celaya, and Tula and will be honored to welcome players, coaches and family members to the second Classic in Ashland. Rogue Valley visitors attend Guanajuato Cervantes Festival Four Rogue Valley residents were among the thousands of visitors to Guanajuato in October for the Cervantes Festival, popularly known as “El Cervantino.” Founded in 1972, it’s widely considered the most important international artistic and cultural event in Latin America. Among those attending this year were three Ashland Amigo Club members, Marina and Doug Kendig of Medford and Jacqueline Milikien of Ashland, who was traveling with Helen Perina of Ashland. The festival featured thousands of performers from more than 90 different countries in plays, concerts, theater and dance productions, art exhibitions, and films in more than 40 locations within Guanajuato. Milikien said she and Perina heard an orchestra and chorus in the Teatro Juarez opera house, a German string quartet in the Templo de Valenciano that sits atop a silver mine. They browsed the Cervantes Museum, featuring impressions of Don Quixote by artists from around the world, and the Diego Rivera Museum that includes works by the famed muralist and his wife, Frida Kahlo. “We had to use ear plugs most evenings” after retiring to a hotel “because of the many colorful mariachi bands performing well into the night,” she said. Ashland graduate offers study abroad advice Mary Gardiner, an SOU study-abroad and international students administrator, reports that Ashland High School graduate Kyanna Kuriyama, who studied at the University of Guanajuato during the 2014-15 academic year, is back at SOU and working in the Office of International Programs, talking to other students interested in studying abroad. Kuriyama was one of two high school “princesses” who represented the city of Ashland at Guanajuato’s annual summer festival in June 2012. Amigo Club’s Entre Amigos (Between Friends) column about Ashland ties to its sister city Guanajuato, Mexico, appears on the third Tuesday of each month.
