Ashland Ski Area survived a snowless ski season followed by a 38-day season, but it didn't emerge unscathed. The financial hit from those two years is still being felt, to the extent that managers plan to drop plans for summer activities that would have required costly environmental studies first. Instead, Manager Hiram Towle says the ski area will focus on the two biggest needs for continued success in the winter: parking and the lodge. Parking spaces have been added, but the lot is still not big enough to accommodate everyone on the busiest days. Towle wants to encourage carpooling and use of the 40-seat Ski Hopper bus. Here's an idea: To encourage carpooling, offer full carloads of skiers discounts on lift tickets or food and drinks. Staff could be assigned to watch for full vehicles and hand out coupons. The lodge needs an upgrade as well, and expanding available space will be a welcome addition. The ski area's board also plans to accumulate a contingency fund for low-snow years — a prudent move. What isn't happening anytime soon is the long-planned addition of new runs and a new lift. That plan fell victim to a campaign by opponents who filed multiple court challenges, despite repeatedly losing. The battle cost the nonprofit ski area money it could have used to start the work — or to cover the losses of two low-snow years. Towle says the expansion isn't completely off the table.
