Terry Holderness named next APD police chief By Robert Plain,Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Robert Plain,Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Jan. 13, 2007 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 4, 2011 at 10:29 PM By Robert Plain,Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Jan. 13, 2007 at 2:00 AM Updated Jan 4, 2011 at 10:29 PM » RELATED CONTENT • Chief Holderness retiring, wants to help find successor » Social News Terry Holderness, a police captain in Fontana, Calif., has accepted an offer to become the next Ashland Chief of Police, pending a site visit by city officials to his home town. "I'm looking forward to it," Holderness said from Fontana on Friday. "We're really excited." He and his wife Georgina, a former police detective, will relocate to Ashland and he will start with APD in mid-March, he said. Mayor John Morrison was also excited about the news. He, City Administrator Martha Bennett and acting police chief Ron Goodpaster will travel to Fontana the week after next to complete a background check of Holderness before the job offer is finalized. "I am pleased that Terry has accepted the offer and I'm confident that the background check and site visit will support my decision," he said. "Terry has a strong background in community policing and I believe his experience and expertise will be a good fit for our community and our police department." Holderness described himself as an expert in community policing. He is a member of PERF, the Washington D.C.-based organization that in a commissioned report advocated for Ashland to adopt greater levels of community policing. He has spoken around the country about community policing and has written academic articles on how police departments should handle issues surrounding homelessness. Holderness said he has dealt with issues of homelessness in Fontana, but feels the issue will have a different flavor in Ashland. "It's more transients [in Ashland] than what I consider homeless." Officer Steve McLennan, spokesman for the Ashland police officers collective bargaining group, said of Holderness, "I don't know a whole lot about him. The officers [in Fontana] seemed to like him. They talked about his experience with community policing." He added that it is somewhat hard to get excited about a new chief because many officers are so fond of interim chief Ron Goodpaster. Holderness is a police captain in Fontana and has never been a full-time chief. But Mayor Morrison said he is confident that he will be able to rise to the occasion. "He has an exemplary record," Morrison said. "He was extremely impressive to the panels here. He's ready for that next step." Holderness said his wife is a theater buff, and is just as excited to move to Ashland as he is, noting that they plan to buy a house within the city limits. When he interviewed for the job, he said, "I'm coming here because I want to live here. Everyone is so friendly when you walk down the street. It's a fun community."
