Rosenberg Rosenberg has been an emergency dispatcher, a dispatch supervisor and the Ashland Police Department training officer. Now she supervises the accreditation and training division of the APD, as well as the community outreach officer, the community service officer, the volunteer program and background investigations, though her roots are in taking 9-1-1 calls. “I originally started with the police department because I was bored with what I was doing at the time,” Rosenberg said. The dean of a business school Rosenberg was attending in Medford tipped her off to a job opening as a dispatcher with the Medford Police Department, where the dean’s husband was a sergeant. Rosenberg worked with MPD for two years, then left the job to raise her two children. In 1983, and again in 1989, the APD recruited Rosenberg to temporarily work as a dispatcher. Once her children were grown, Rosenberg came back to the department and twice earned “Dispatcher of the Year” honors before being promoted to dispatch supervisor in 1999. “When I first began, I had not a clue what I was doing,” Rosenberg said, but she enjoyed the police culture — the independence of the officers and their level of commitment to the community. “They have a lot of responsibility out there on the street and, as a support, you have that same responsibility,” she said. So when dispatch services for local public safety entities were consolidated in Medford two years ago, Rosenberg decided to stay on at the APD as the newly created accreditation and training manager. She thinks she would have stayed with dispatch had the program not left the APD headquarters, but got the opportunity to help define her role within the department. In her position, Rosenberg schedules and hosts or arranges travel for all of the trainings various members of the force go through, including first aid and CPR, firearms, ethics, customer service, wildland fire behavior and more specific sessions for detectives and department managers. In her first two years on the job, the department has had added more on-site trainings, which reduce travel costs and keep the officers available if there is a serious incident. Bringing trainings to Ashland aided the department two weeks ago when a mentally ill man caught in a 45-minute standoff with law enforcement wielded a knife at several officers, including APD Chief Mike Bianca. A handful of APD officers were at a first aid training and were able to leave the lesson to be on-scene. “Basically, we never had a training officer before I took the job,” Rosenberg said. “But I like what I do now.
