The second-ranked Raiders had seven pins plus three Boxer forfeits, clinching the shutout when heavyweight Clayton Burtis pinned Bryan Hoffman in 50 seconds. The lopsided victory secured for SOU a final dual meet record of 14-2 heading into the NAIA Western Region Qualifying Tournament, next Saturday in Havre, Mont. After the dual began with three straight forfeits by the visitors Southern Oregon quickly erased all doubt with a series of quick pins. First, seventh-ranked Devin Poppen finished off Eric Harder at 133 in 2:48, then at 141 Trevor Hancock beat Shawn Spear in 1:20. Fourth-ranked Tyler Cowger won the 149-pound match over Keith Thomas in 1:02 and third-ranked 157-pounder Dalton Urrutia floored Ricky Ridela in 2:30. Three-time national champion and top-ranked 174-pound senior Brock Gutches kept the momentum going despite moving up to 184, pinning Joey Norcia in 3:17 in the only match that lasted more than one round. At 197, two-time All-American Taylor Johnson needed only 15 seconds to cast aside Mycal Sigado, leaving only the eighth-ranked Burtis to finish off a perfect senior night and SOU’s second shutout of the season. Southern Oregon also won three exhibition matches Friday — Casey Coulter beat Coleman Johns at 125, Garrett Urrutia beat Crocker at 165 and Reed Tennyson beat Jones at 174. SOU softball At Redding, Calif., Southern Oregon went 2-1 in the first day of the Simpson tournament on Friday to improve to 8-1. The Raiders on Friday beat William Jessup 8-2 and Hope International 12-3, and lost to British Columbia 6-3. Statistics were not available at press time. Track and field At Seattle, Southern Oregon’s men’s distance medley relay team placed second and met the NAIA ‘A’ qualifying standard at the University of Washington’s Husky Invitational, an indoor event, on Friday. The SOU men finished behind only Academy of Art (Calif.) in the 4,000-meter race, crossing the finish line in 9 minutes, 58.42 seconds, the fastest NAIA mark of the season. SOU’s Zach Boyd-Helm ran the first 1,200 meters, JJ Latu took over for the 400 portion and Kevin Jorgensen 800 and Jared Hixon the final mile. The national indoor meet is March 6-8 in Ohio. SOU’s women’s distance medley relay team of Karen Silvas, Amelia Maguin, Aspen Abbott and Jessie Rozario placed 14th in 12:40.35, missing the ‘A’ qualifying standard by less than four seconds. Football Twenty-five Southern Oregon football players maintained a 3.0 or better grade-point average, good enough to land on the Frontier Conference academic all-star team, the league has announced. The Raiders to earn all-academic honors were: Daniel Abernethy, Heston Altenbach, Mylz Blake, Larry Bowen, Daniel Breaux, Michael Bryant, Colin Davis, Austin Dodge, Dominic Giampaoli, Drew Gibson, Colton Grimwood, Caden Johnson, Steven Josephson, Macloud Luntey, Louis Macklin, Adan Madera, Sean McShane, Sheridan Olds, Gannon Schroder, Jeremy Scottow, Jack Singler, Alex Stork, Nick Tatom, Teran Togia and Sean Tow.
