Wildlife wandering around town is hardly news. Deer are so numerous they have become more of a nuisance than a charming feature of life in the wildland interface. No doubt the deer may have lured the cougar. Lithia Park, with its forestland ambience and natural setting, makes an ideal habitat for a wandering wildcat. Residents should be aware of the increased risk, but reasonable precautions should prevent any incidents. There is no record of a cougar attacking a human in Oregon, but attacks have occurred elsewhere. Still, Oregon is home to more than 5,000 cougars, and there is no reason to tempt fate by disregarding the threat. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says cougars usually hunt at dawn and dusk. They do not chase down prey, instead ambushing deer or other animals and killing with a bite to the neck. People venturing into areas where a cougar has been seen or or is likely to be should hike in groups, make noise to warn wildlife of their presence, and leave dogs at home or keep them on a leash. If you encounter a cougar, do not run. Back away slowly, standing tall to make yourself appear large. Make sure the cougar has an escape route. If attacked, fight back. If you find a dead animal in the park, leave and call police, 541-482-5211 or the Parks Commission, 541-488-5340.
