With the Ashland Daily Tidings turning the front page into advertising for the national chains of corporate America, you might as well shut down your local shop. What has happened to the Tidings? In the same week that zero press was given to an impressive banner hanging across the Mt. Ashland access road to stop the ski development expansion, they have given front page press to Subway sandwiches' advertising campaign. What happened to the days when the Tidings worked with our dedicated youth activists and promoted local businesses? Eric Navickas Ashland Support in Iowa is critical for Kucinich It seems to me that a Democratic presidential candidate needs to be among the top 3 or 4 in the Iowa Caucus on Jan. 19 in order to be the Democratic candidate November 2004. Thusly, my red Toyota will be pulling a blue trailer to Iowa in which we will bake sourdough bread, create some mouth watering warming soup with some music to go with it. Dennis Kucinich, one of the 9 Democratic candidates motivates me. His understanding of what the world needs now is beyond reproach to any one with open eyes mind and heart. In this day and age of George, is it not a wonder that a Democratic representative of a blue collar father from the Cleveland district is a presidential candidate who believes that the disenfranchised, the poor and sick and seemingly powerless should be able to determine their lives rather than the large corporations? Is it not a wonder that he believes in the power of the people to know what is really going on in this red white and blue land of ours and in the possibly great and peaceful world in which we live? Please support us and yourselves by doing what you can to have Dennis Kucinich be one of the leaders in the Iowa Caucus of Jan. 19. Call every Democratic voter you know in Iowa. Please support our efforts for the canvassers in Des Moines. The Constitution 1776 - Dennis Kucinich 2004 Larry Yehudah Roven Ashland The time is now to register objections At the public meeting on Dec. 16, the Oregon DEQ informed us that the Medford-Ashland Air Quality Committee did not consider how its plan to ease restrictions on particulate emissions would affect levels of other dangerous pollutants such as mercury, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Yet, allowing more particulates through the smokestacks inevitably increases release of other pollutants. The committee should not speak for the community about air quality unless it understands the full ramifications of its actions. Mercury is an example of what this could mean. Hydrocarbon combustion is the primary source of mercury pollution, and high concentrations of mercury can accumulate down-wind from smokestacks. Many physicians, including the prestigious Institute of Medicine, consider a relationship between autism and mercury plausible [see McGinnis W. Environ Hlth Perspect 109(7):A303-4(2001) and Bradstreet J, et. al. J American Phys and Surgeons 8(3):76-9 (2003)]. Oregon has a particularly high incidence of autism already, and this valley is no exception. At a bare minimum, we deserve to know how much the relaxed standards would increase mercury levels, and in which areas.
