The boycott of her business Shakespeare Books by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, ordered by OSF Director Cynthia Rider, continues. A number of OSF actors were offended by the book "Little Black Sambo," one of the display of banned books Judi has provided for years in her window as an educational tool, and as a warning about intolerance. These books offended someone's moral or political views at some time, and were banned. They are by definition banned books. Judi worries about losing her business., but does not wish to give in to OSF bullying. Where is the support of her fellow merchants , and the progressive citizens of Ashland? OSF is a nonprofit public benefit corporation, and as such has an obligation to benefit the community that supports them. I am curious whether the OSF Board of Directors, or the generous corporate sponsors to OSF, support the boycott initiated and continued by Rider. Do they share responsibility for, and do they support, her actions? History is full of instances of businesses being boycotted by politically correct bullies, for political, racial or religious reasons. Pay attention to history. Michael Slater Jacksonville Panel backs 97 Thank you to the Citizens’ Initiative Review Commission, which voted last week to support Measure 97, the ballot measure that would ensure that corporations are paying their fair share in taxes. Authorized by the 2011 Legislature, the Citizens’ Initiative Review Commission is an independent panel charged with reviewing upcoming measures. After four days of careful study, the panel found that Measure 97 would raise $3 billion annually, enabling major investments in education, health care and senior services, by changing the tax code for C corporations doing $25 million or more in Oregon sales — the top 1,051 of Oregon’s 400,000 businesses. This is a game-changing amount of revenue that could improve Oregon’s low graduation rates, make health care more accessible and provide 20,000 more seniors with in-home care. I hope you’ll look at the evidence collected by the commission and join me and thousands of other Oregonians in voting yes on Measure 97 this November.
