He meant it in the context of connected with the constituents in his congressional district, but it doesn't get much more local than the Ashland City Council and Parks Commission. The presidential contest will get most of the attention, but today is the beginning of the local filing period for the Nov. 8 election. The decisions local officials make are likely to have more direct impact on the daily lives of Ashland residents than whoever occupies the White House. Mayor John Stromberg, City Councilors Carol Voisin, Greg Lemhouse and Rich Rosenthal and Parks Commissioners Vanston Shaw and Jim Lewis are up for re-election, should they choose to seek another term. But whether they run or not, having choices on the ballot increases the likelihood that issues will get thoroughly discussed before voters cast their ballots. The City Council has been involved in the issues of transients downtown, the Normal Neighborhood Plan and the redesign of the Plaza, among others. The Parks Commission has handled issues including swimming facilities and dogs in parks. If you have an interest in any of these issues or in others, now is your chance to get into the game.
