OUR VIEW Our View: Pool is not a priority Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Nov. 26, 2014 @ 12:01 am Posted Nov. 26, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News Southern Oregon University's plans for a major remodeling of McNeal Pavilion does not include plans to keep and renovate the university's swimming pool, a decision that doesn't sit well with some community members. The students, however, apparently do not consider the pool a priority, which suggests the decision is a sound one. McNeal is badly in need of an upgrade. The 1957 structure has seen better days, and consultants hired to examine the building recommended it be replaced. SOU officials plan to spend $29 million rebuilding McNeal and a new Student Recreation Center adjacent to it. A delegation from the Rogue Valley Masters, a community swim team based in Ashland, asked the Associated Students of Southern Oregon University board to reconsider eliminating the pool. But the student fees committee decided not to pursue the matter. There's a good reason for that: A major portion of the funding for the rebuilding project comes from student fees, and students have indicated they would rather not spend money they contribute on a pool. We can understand the sentiment that a four-year state university ought to have a swimming pool, but if the university doesn't have a swim team, and students don't use it much and won't miss it, it can be considered a luxury in these days of tight budgets. Should the university, already struggling financially because of declining state support, pay for a swimming pool so non-student community members can use it? It would appear the students whose fees will be used for the project have answered that question.
