By all accounts, he did a good job himself — although it would have been nice to see him stick around a little longer. Hummel's last day is today, and an interim superintendent, Suzanne Cusick, will take over for the 2016-2017 school year. That temporary appointment was made necessary because Hummel announced only in March that he would be leaving after the end of the school year. That didn't leave enough time to conduct a thorough search for a permanent replacement. Hummel has said he needs to return to Idaho, where his family remains, and of course he should do what is best for him and for them. Meanwhile, the Ashland School Board has a job to do: Find another strong leader to continue the success that the Ashland district is known for. Being superintendent in Ashland is not without challenges, partly because of the generally high performance of its students and the strong backing of the community, both financial and otherwise. Along with a supportive community and involved parents come high expectations. It shouldn't be hard to attract educators who want to work in Ashland, but those candidates should understand the pressures they will face in a community accustomed to the highest graduation rates in the region. The successful applicant also should be willing to make a long-term commitment to this district and its students.
