For Longshore, whose specialty is percussion and is director of the jazz ensemble, being able to teach has been a fun experience. "I love exposing students to new ideas and watching them take those ideas and run with it and see that spark," he said. One of his favorite classes is art and music from the 20th century to present, which he co-teaches with his wife Jennifer Longshore, who teaches art at the university. "I enjoy it very much," he said. "I like seeing the interaction between music and the visual arts. It makes for interesting cross dialogue." His other specialty is Indian music, which he said he enjoys learning and teaching to others. "I love the melodic aspect and rhythm of Indian music," he said. "It's very interesting music and I enjoy it very much." Besides teaching, Longshore also performs with his percussion duo, Skin & Bones, as well as several other projects and concerts locally. On Nov. 11, he is performing in "Sonoluminescence: An Evening of Imagination," along with musician Todd Barton, dancer Suzee Grilley, graphic artist B. Bayard, and lighting designer Michael Maag, at the DanceSpace in Ashland. Longshore said he enjoys working with artists from different fields to come up with an unique show. "I enjoy the different treatment of the same idea by people from different perspectives," he said. "It makes for a very interesting experience." Longshore, who has taught at universities in San Diego and North Dakota, believes it's vital to teach and encourage the arts. "I think music is one of the most important artistic expressions and I don't think it should be denied anywhere," he said. "Music is important, both for listening enjoyment and for people who enjoy making music."
