OUR VIEW Our View: Bridging the divide Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted May. 5, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 5, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Residents in the East and West Nevada Street neighborhoods turned out in large numbers at a Transportation Commission meeting last week, most to oppose a new bridge over Bear Creek. We refer to plural neighborhoods because, in the absence of a bridge, that's what they are. There is some debate over whether a bridge ever existed connecting the two portions of Nevada Street, but all it takes is a glance at the satellite view of the area to decide that there probably should have been one all along. Residents — especially those east of the creek — must drive a considerable distance out of their way to reach Eagle Mill Road to the north or Hersey Street to the south. Residents say they worry about increased traffic, and raise safety concerns over narrow, winding portions of Nevada Street and the lack of sidewalks. We can understand they have concerns, but ultimately the commission has to look at the bigger picture. The bigger picture becomes clearer in that same satellite photo, which shows large areas of town isolated from each other. If safety is a concern, residents east of the creek might want to look at that overhead view and realize that, in the event of a fast-moving fire or other disaster, North Mountain Avenue is the only way out of their neighborhood — either north across the freeway or south to Hersey Street. Commissioners should consider residents' concerns, but recommend the best transportation plan for the community as a whole.
