Ashland police have taken 11 reports of thefts from cars in just six days, with items taken valued at more than $1,000. That's a bit more often than normal, but Chief Tighe O'Meara says these incidents tend to come in waves. The best practice, of course, is to park your car inside a locked garage. But not everyone has a garage, and many who do use it for storage rather than parking. In any case, police advise people to lock their cars as well as removing anything of value. Some motorists may believe locking their car makes it more likely a thief will break a window to gain entry, adding the cost of a repair bill to the loss. But police say forced break-ins are rare. Nearly all are crimes of opportunity, and using force makes noise. In addition, many newer cars are equipped with alarms. In the 11 most recent cases, every car entered was unlocked. The most inexplicable cases are those of people who leave guns in unlocked cars, compounding property loss with a threat to public safety. Next on the head-scratching list are folks who leave their keys inside an unlocked car, inviting a thief to drive away with the vehicle. Park, lock and take your keys — and guns — with you.
