Show up for monsters, stay for the Dash ... Tears can be a way to Inner Peace ... LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Oct. 21 Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Oct. 21, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Oct. 21, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Practicing authenticity After the first Democratic primary debate, mainstream media pundits are falling all over themselves, declaring Hillary Clinton the “winner.” Hyperbolic praise includes words like: “commanding,” “self-assured,” “poised.” All because she spent two weeks realigning her positions to match national polls and unsuccessfully practicing what comes naturally to Bernie Sanders: authenticity. The pundits’ conclusions are at best suspect when one considers the following: In every state, according to Google Trends, Sanders was, post-debate, the most Googled candidate. Sanders was the most-discussed candidate on Facebook Online polls by MSNBC, Daily Kos, Time, Slate, CNN/Time, Drudge, The Street and CNN’s Facebook all gave the win to Sanders. Focus groups at CNN, Fusion and Fox News said that Bernie had won. Whether Clinton or Sanders is considered the “winner,” is nonsense to anyone but those who have a dumbed-down view of politics as a personality contest or sporting event. One must ask, however, why mainstream pundits are so eager to promote Clinton as the people’s choice. Could it be that, assured of having “embedded” access to Washington news, their pockets are lined by the “centrist” DNC establishment? Could it be their belief that sycophantic praise of Clinton will assure them quid-pro-quo access to the Oval Office? Is everyone just “practicing” authenticity? Andy Seles Ashland LNG fight is not over As a Rogue Valley resident who has worked hard this past year on the "Stand Up For Oregon! No LNG. No Pipeline" campaign to stop the Jordan Cove Pacific Connector pipeline project from negatively impacting our beautiful rural Southern Oregon, I was hardly surprised when FERC issued a final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which presupposes they will be approving the project. FERC has a history of approving anything that the fossil fuel industry and their lobbyists ask them, so this was to be expected. What concerns me is how many of my fellow Oregonians believe that this means the fight to stop the pipeline is over. The very opposite is true. There are numerous regulatory and permitting hurdles to be cleared, and there are legal avenues for blocking the project as well. There will be opportunities for citizens to comment and attend hearings. Gov. Kate Brown has the power to stop this project by legally challenging FERC's approval, as Gov. Kulongoski did in 2010. The Stand Up For Oregon! campaign urges all who have concerns about this project to call the governor’s office at 503-378-4582 and insist that she stand with us in protecting the Oregon we love. Mark A. Newberger Ashland Time for action Thank you to the Ashland Daily Tidings for the “Our View” piece, “Climate of confusion”, on Thursday, Oct. 15. I am somewhat puzzled by the title, however. In my opinion, very few of the world’s leaders, scientists and involved citizenry are truly puzzled. Some may pretend to be confused and react with personal outrage fueled by self-interest, delusion and greed. How long did the tobacco companies deny that cigarettes caused cancer and lung disease? The only confusion appears to be what we are going to do about our climate situation, how soon, and whether it will be enough to keep our children’s children from living in a world of horror. I echo farmer Steve Fry of Fry Family Farms when he bellowed to the crowd at the climate summit: “Come on people, we need a carbon tax!” It’s time to live in integrity and take action. Check out Citizens’ Climate Lobby online to learn more about how a carbon tax could be the fastest way to turn things around. Money talks. Susan Bizeau Talent Addyi has risks As a pharmacist and longtime supporter of women’s health issues, I feel compelled to speak out against Addyi the new drug that was recently approved by the FDA to treat women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD). Addyi is being hyped as the “Female Viagra.” Addyi was rejected twice by the FDA as an antidepressant because of side effects and ineffectiveness. The manufacturer then switched tactics and mounted a public relations campaign pressuring the FDA with public opinion using “gender equality” arguments claiming that men have Viagra, so women should also have a drug to improve sexual satisfaction. This drug is basically just another antidepressant. There are serious potential side effects such as a sudden drop in blood pressure and possible fainting. The drug carries a black box warning that it should not be used with alcohol. Plus, Addyi is not very effective. Women taking Addyi experience 0.8 (less than one) more “satisfying sexual events” per month compared to placebo controls. Addyi will probably cause side effects and harm millions of women. For more information, I have an extensive article on this topic on my blog on naturalpharmacist.net .
