A week after the league's season-opening slopestyle meet was postponed Tratensek-Contor made the most of his 2016 debut by besting the field with a 44.62-second dash down the mountain in his first banked slalom run of the day. It turned out to be the better of his two runs and good enough to edge second-place finisher and teammate John Corder, who completed his first run in 47.12 seconds. The top eight banked slalom boys' placers hailed from Ashland. Sumner placed second to Sophie Phillips of North Medford in both the banked slalom and the boardercross, with Phillips clocking in at 57.09 in the banked slalom to Sumner's 61.53. Placing third for the Ashland girls was Gracie Bales (63.5). In the boys' boardercross, Ashland's Lars Filson won and teammate Vance Patterson placed second. Another Southern League banked slalom and boardercross meet is scheduled for this Saturday at Mount Ashland. Nordic Skiing Ashland High's Elias Lawson placed sixth to pace the Grizzly boys in the 5-kilometer Coaches Appreciation Race on Saturday at Mount Shasta. Sage Fox of South Eugene won the Southern League event in 14 minutes, 31.8 seconds and Adi Wolfenden of Mountain View was the runner-up in 14:41.1. Lawson finished in 16:22.4 and Ashland's next best boys' skier, Erik Oline, placed ninth in 16:43.3. Sage Hassell of Mountain View won the girls' 5K in 17:07.4. Ashland's top finisher, Mina Devore, placed 16th in 22:54.2. Ashland's boys' relay team of Oline, Lawson and Taylor Amarotico placed third in 3x1K race, finishing in 8:40.3. The next Southern League meet is scheduled for Saturday at Mount Bachelor. College Track and Field Southern Oregon junior Matt East was named the Cascade Conference men's indoor track athlete of the week after hitting an "A" qualifying mark in the 60-meter dash and a provisional qualifying mark in the 200 at the Tracktown USA High Performance #3 meet in Portland last week. East, who hails from Modesto, Calif., was the fastest collegiate runner in the 60 in 6.86 seconds and narrowly missed the "B" standard in the 200 with a time of 22.36.
