By Sam Wheeler for Revels Posted Nov. 28, 2014 @ 2:00 am Updated Dec 2, 2014 at 11:07 AM » RELATED CONTENT • Festival of Light draws thousands despite weather » Social News The Rogue Valley’s most shimmering start to the holiday season will kick off at Ashland’s 22nd annual Festival of Light celebration on the day after Thanksgiving. The celebration continues throughout the holiday season, but the holiday parade and downtown Grand Illumination, on Friday, Nov. 28, draw more than 10,000 revelers to town each year. Kicking off the Friday celebration at 1 p.m., Livia Genise will emcee holiday-themed live music, dancing and theater performances on the Ashland Plaza until the Lights of Life Tree is lit at 4 p.m. and the parade kicks off at 5 p.m. Santa’s parade typically draws about 25 entries, she said. The route runs along East Main Street from the Ashland public library to the Plaza. The Grand Illumination, which includes Mr. and Mrs. Claus singing Christmas carols from the balcony of the Brickroom, a restaurant and bar, will begin immediately after the roughly hour-long parade. The million-light spectacle in downtown Ashland is composed of about 100,000 light strands that would stretch about 38 miles if connected end to end. “It is our honor to create memories, and that is really what this is about, so we’re asking folks to come find their holiday spirit in Ashland,” said Katharine Flanagan, marketing director for the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the event. Following the Grand Illumination, Santa will hear gift wishes from children and pose for photographs at the Black Swan Theatre on Pioneer Street until 8 p.m. “That’s such a popular thing. Each year we see over 500 children visit Santa and Mrs. Claus,” Flanagan said. For parents, the chamber is encouraging local shopping by printing 5,000 holiday coupon books that will be accepted at restaurants and retailers throughout town, she said. “We’re really encouraging everyone to shop local and support Ashland businesses. There are some really cool coupons for everywhere from restaurants to Mt. Ashland and certainly retailers,” she said. In addition to the downtown lights spectacle, 50 giant holiday wreaths and more than 30 lit-up snowflake decorations will adorn the streets of Ashland throughout the holiday season, as will 41 refurbished, bright-red, LED light lanterns, Flanagan said.
