The Kiwanis Club honors a senior student from Ashland High School each month during the school year. Ethan has taken a wide variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses starting in his sophomore year. He is currently taking his math course at a local college as he finished AP Calculus as a junior. He has not had less than an "A" during his most challenging semesters. In addition to being a top-notch student, Ethan has shown campus-wide leadership by being a student tutor for the past three years. Outside of school, he tutored students from his temple in Hebrew. For fun, Ethan likes to throw the discus on the varsity track team and sing. He has been a member of a number of campus groups and organizations, including serving as president of Model United Nations for two years, as captain of the Southern Oregon championship Brain Bowl team, and as captain of the Science Bowl team. As a member of the math team, he finished fourth in state in the pre-calculus division. He is a member of both Mu Alpha Theta and the National Honor Society. Ethan’s top choice at this time for a college education is Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. He plans to become a professor of history. Emma has taken many upper-division courses during her school years. During her current schedule she is taking French 4, AP calculus and an honors theater tech class. She has managed to do this while maintaining a very high GPA. Emma has been a big part of AHS’s extremely successful theater department, working both onstage and backstage for numerous productions. She started onstage using a local theater group’s summer conservatory to launch her theater talents. She has performed in a number of AHS productions. She moved to backstage activities, and was so successful there that she was hired by the school as a theater technician paid to help outside groups who rent the theater with all of their technical needs, a very demanding position. She also worked for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this past summer as both an intern for the pre-show entertainment known as the Green Show, and as an usher. As a member of the Theatre 2 class, Emma wrote a one-act play and is doing two more short pieces as her senior project. In addition to these contributions, Emma’s compassion and commitment to others in the Ashland community is shown by her volunteering for a grief counseling organization called Winterspring, which helps facilitate groups for both students her age and younger. She says her experiences there have been both intrinsically rewarding as well as helping her explore the human condition for her writings. Next year, Emma’s top choice for college is New York University. She is also interested in Fordham University and DePaul University. She wants to earn a degree in French and plans to become a playwright. Both Ethan and Emma received Student of the Month award certificates and $50 in cash. During the month of May, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship.
