SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY Student artist's large painting disappears from SOU Large oil valued at more than $1,000 Comment By Eli Stillman For the Tidings DailyTidings.com By Eli Stillman For the Tidings Posted Jul. 12, 2015 at 5:03 PM By Eli Stillman For the Tidings Posted Jul. 12, 2015 at 5:03 PM » Social News A painting done by a Southern Oregon University art student disappeared from a Miriam Addy classroom sometime shortly before the Fourth of July. Melissa Ghiglieri, a senior art major, was taking a two-week summer painting course at the school where she had five of her paintings placed in one of the multiple student storing compartments. Aside from the one missing, none of Ghiglieri’s work nor the other students appears to be touched. The piece that was taken is an unnamed 4- by 5-foot oil painting that took approximately 50 hours to complete. It was featured in the student art show at the end of winter term and temporarily hung in the Medford gallery, Art and Bloom. While hanging in Medford, the painting was priced at $1,200 and, according to Ghiglieri, there were multiple parties that showed interest in purchasing it. At the end of the term art students sometimes leave their paintings they don’t want to keep on campus to be reused. This allows other students to paint over the canvas instead of spending time and money to make a new one. Ghiglieri says that in these situations the artist leaving their paintings will donate it through the teacher or leave it unmarked in a pile. It would be difficult to say that the thief mistook this piece as unwanted, since Melissa clearly signed and tucked it away with other paintings and given its estimated value. This is believed to be the biggest missing piece of art, as there have even been few on record ever stolen. With the building being open almost 9 hours a day and students coming to and from classes with their own canvases, it is a possibility that another student may have taken the painting — a possibility Ghigleri hopes isn’t true. “I’d hope it wasn’t another art student who was stealing another person’s work," she said. "I just want it back.” Anyone with information involving the missing painting and email Melissa Ghiglieri at [email protected].
