USA Today chose the headline, “Second chance at a first impression.” That headline is false. Clinton is not reinvented, restored or renewed. If anything, Clinton 2.0 is a far inferior product to the candidate who lost her initial bid to Barack Obama in 2008. Clinton’s original campaign for the highest office in the land came after she had stepped away from the role of jilted first lady and established herself as the talented politician and lawyer she was before her husband rose to prominence. Clinton is a graduate of the Yale Law School. She was the first female partner in the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, Arkansas, and was twice named one of the 100 most influential attorneys in America. She was elected to the Senate from New York and proved herself as a legislator. Her name recognition came from her time in the White House with her husband. Her resume stands on its own. But even with that resume, she couldn’t top newcomer Barack Obama, who won despite being a black man with a Muslim name who was running for the chance to lead a country that was actively at war with not one but two Muslim countries. If she couldn’t win in 2008, I don’t see how this version can expect a better result. Eight years have passed and she was smart enough to leave her post as secretary of state a couple of years before the 2016 campaign began. What should have been a chance to secure her “foreign policy” street cred turned into two fresh scandals with an attack on our Libyan Embassy in Benghazi and the latest email scandal where it was discovered that she used private email to avoid the legally required record keeping associated with official government accounts. If anything, more shine is off that apple than ever before. Another problem Clinton has is her inevitability. She announced on a Sunday afternoon. That is not a prime time “hit the headlines”-style announcement. It gave the pundits something to talk about on Monday morning, but it isn’t exactly like her intentions were a well-kept secret. The issue with being expected to win is that America loves an underdog. When expectations are high, you can do extremely well and disappoint. All of the lesser-known candidates that jump in behind Clinton will be seen as huge success stories if they can achieve even the slightest gains. Her spot at the top will also probably not last as long as she would like because candidates on both sides of the spectrum will be taking shots at her on everything from Obamacare to Benghazi and even actions of her husband. That doesn’t bode well for her. Clinton will be running not to lose. Everyone assumes that the race is hers to lose. With the damage done to her brand since 2008, I expect she will.
