Pop Culture Notebook: 'Community,' 'Avengers' and 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' on the horizon By Victor D. Infante The Worcester Telegram & Gazette DailyTidings.com By Victor D. Or more perhaps more precisely, there’s the time of year when everything is out and you are inundated with new TV shows and movies, and there’s the time when your viewing schedule is relatively light, and your appetite is being whetted by trailers. As we seem to be in the latter, here are some movie and television trailers that have had fans a little worked up: • “Community” (March 17): The sitcom that wouldn’t die has taken advantage of the frenzy for streaming shows online to find a new life on Yahoo. And it looks like it hasn’t really changed much in the transition … and thank goodness for that. The trailer, which parodies a recent trailer for “The Avengers,” hints that characters are as crazy as ever, and the plots, as always, are completely unhinged. Let’s hear it for perseverance! • “Insurgent” (March 20): This sequel to the movie “Divergent” — starring Shailene Woodley, who in addition to the previous film, made a big splash in the heartbreaking “The Fault in Our Stars” — looks to be a bit more action-packed than its predecessor, as the conflict over conformity escalates from the school to the battlefield. • “Orphan Black” (April 18): It’s taken a couple seasons, but people are beginning to see that Tatiana Maslany is one of the most gifted actresses working today, as evidenced by her work on this BBC America clone drama, which has her playing no fewer than six characters so convincingly that you forget that they’re all the same person. Need proof? The season three trailer has her in her roles as soccer mom Allison, runaway thief Sarah and scientist Cosima, and even in a short space her characters are distinct and convincing. • “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (May 1): “Avengers” is a hard act to follow. Joss Whedon’s superhero epic was both a critical success and a box office bonanza. By this point, fans are looking for a sign of weakness. But if there are any, they’re not evident in the trailers for the forthcoming sequel, which give a good look at James Spader’s robotic antagonist, Ultron, and enough cuts of action scenes to keep adrenaline junkies eager. Will this be the biggest movie of the year? Um, yeah. That’s probably not even in question. But will it be as awesome as the original? Let’s just say this trailer is enough to make one hopeful. • “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (Aug. 14): Henry Cavill — known for his previous roles as Jesus and Superman — gets a little more down to earth with this adaptation of the popular ’60s television show. And it’s hard to deny that Guy Ritchie’s take on the stylish spy drama is absolutely delectable. It’s hard not to grin while watching Cavill bouncing off Armie Hammer as a Russian spy. • “Mr. Holmes” (June 19): Sure, there are a lot of renditions of Sherlock Holmes out these days — Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr. and Jonny Lee Miller, to name the most prominent — and it seems there might not be room for another. But then a trailer comes along with Sir Ian McKellan playing the Great Detective in his twilight years, and suddenly it’s easy to believe there may be room for one more. Even in a few short scenes, the man who played Magneto, Gandalf and other favorites brings a fiery intelligence to the character. That this film reunites McKellan with “Gods and Monsters” director Bill Condon, which is reason enough to give this one a go. • “Regression” (Aug. 28): With this movie, “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson continues to break away into more varied roles with this dark thriller that involves an evil cult and repressed memories of a murder.
