--> --> Mannix making run for governor MEDFORD (AP) - Former Republican state Rep. Kevin Mannix officially entered the gubernatorial race on Monday, announcing his candidacy in Portland, Eugene, Roseburg, Medford and Grants Pass. Mannix, a conservative Salem lawyer, said he plans to shake things up by supporting local government and fighting federal control. "We need some inspiration from the state government," Mannix said. Mannix, who had let it be known for months that he planned to run, enters a primary race that already includes state Labor Commissioner Jack Roberts and Portland Lawyer Ron Saxton. Mannix, who made a reputation in Salem as a tough-on-crime legislator, is the only GOP candidate opposed to abortion rights. His candidacy will likely draw support from the strong anti-abortion camp within the state party and could make for a bitterly contested primary. Inside a Medford airport hangar Monday, Mannix told about 30 supporters that as governor he would work to back local decisions regarding land use. He said that meant he would support decisions such as the Jackson County commissioners' effort to shrink the newly created Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument near Ashland. The state also should have more control over issues such as water for Klamath Basin farmers, he said. Mannix also said he would attempt to reduce class sizes and eliminate unnecessary paperwork for school administrators. "We do not need to have a state government that micromanages education," he said. In Portland, Mannix sought to broaden his base by stressing environmental goals. He said he would speed efforts to clean the Willamette River and focus more state and federal help on Portland's effort to eliminate sewage discharges into the river. Email your...
