North Medford fought back from a 6-2 deficit, blew a one-run lead in the seventh, then won the game on Jared Evans’ RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, completing a wild nonleague game with an 8-7 victory over the shorthanded Grizzlies. Josh Berman led off the eighth with a double to left-center, and pinch runner Tyler Oedekoven scored easily on Evans' slap to right. North Medford (21-6), ranked fifth in the 6A media poll, will enter the state playoffs on a 10-game win streak. Ashland (13-13), which has lost five straight, travels to face Silverton in a Class 5A play-in game Friday. Despite injuries to starters Kyle Milgram, Jett Hamik and Aaron Scott that shelved all three, the Grizzlies jumped ahead 6-2. Jose Perez singled with the bases loaded and two out in the third to drive in two runs. North climbed back in the game by scoring four runs on one hit in the fourth, as Ashland shot itself in the foot with two costly errors and four walks. Down 7-6 in the seventh, Ashland got the tying run aboard thanks to a one-out fielding error. Milgrim, nursing a sore back, then came off the bench to deliver a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing the tying run into scoring position at second. Two wild pitches later the game was tied. Holmes joins a freshmen class that will include North Marion’s Kerry Cook, Beau Hamilton of Redding, Calif., and Jordan DeBortoli of Kathmandu, Nepal. "This class of freshmen follows the blueprint we've used for the past four years: Get good people who are good students and can shoot the basketball,” SOU head coach Brian McDermott said. "The only difference with this group is they may be a bit more athletic in terms of speed, verticals and quickness." That’s certainly true of Holmes, a 6-foot-2 point guard who averaged 16.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.9 steals as a senior. Also a star defensive back for the Black Tornado, Holmes has been named a valedictorian at NMHS. Cook, a 6-foot-4 wing, averaged 16 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals as a senior and was a unanimous pick for the all-tournament team at the Class 4A state tournament. Hamilton, a 6-foot-5 forward, hails from Foothill High School, where he led the Eastern Athletic League in shooting percentage (51), free-throw percentage (81) and blocked shots per game (2.0). He also scored 16 points a game and averaged a double-double (20-10) in the state playoffs. DeBortoli, a 6-foot-5 forward, was raised in Weed, Calif.
