An Ashland police report shows officers responded to four reports of unlawful entries between 8:30 a.m. and 2:35 p.m., with a fifth reported just before 6 p.m. that was believed to have occurred "sometime during the preceding 24 hours." Those crimes were reported along North Laurel Street, Siskiyou Boulevard, Hillcrest Street, Timberline Terrace and Pinecrest Terrace. Most were on unlocked cars. "We don’t get very many smash and grabs," Ashland Deputy Chief Warren Hensman said. "I wouldn’t say it’s rare. (This) is definitely a number I’m taking note of." Nearly 50 vehicles were broken into over the President's Day weekend in Medford, police said. Medford police reported they responded to 48 such break-ins around town between Friday and Monday. A majority of the incidents were reported in east Medford, along Kerrisdale Ridge, Eagle Trace, Golf View and Wilkshire drives. As in Ashland, most vehicles were unlocked. Thieves made off with a treasure trove of property, police said. "A lot of purses, wallets, an iPad, watches, CDs, sunglasses; just the stuff that you would have in your car," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said, adding that, on average, thieves made off with $100 to $200 worth of property per vehicle. Investigators continue to urge vehicle owners to keep the doors locked and to not leave valuable property inside in plain sight. "If (thieves) check out a car and don't see anything inside and the car is locked, they're not going to break a window just to take a look around. It's too risky," Budreau said.
