--> --> Dec. 5: Grizz girls notch first win of 2001-02 season Ashland Daily Tidings MERLIN - Stephanie Santos got her first win as head coach of the Ashland High girls basketball team as the Grizzlies downed North Valley 59-50 Tuesday night. Even though it was against a 3A school, Santos was happy to see the Grizz get a victory. "We are just so young," Santos said. "But we are getting better. Every time we go out we do things better." Tuesday night it was a matter of the Grizz girls taking better care of the ball. In Ashland's season-opener Friday against Corvallis, the Grizz committed 46 turnovers. Against North Valley Ashland kept the miscues under 20 and came away with the victory. "Against Corvallis it was the most amazing thing I've seen," Santos said. "I think a lot of it had to do with nerves. And also we were starting a freshman point guard (Alysse Carlson). She's getting better and realizing that this isn't eighth-grade basketball." Junior post Marla Morin scored 13 points for the third game in a row, while junior Julia Sobolik added 12 points against the Knights. Ashland fell behind 19-12 in the opening period and 28-26 at half before staging a comeback. The Grizz outscored the Knights 23-9 in the third quarter to take control of the game. "We switched to a man-to-man and really got after it," Santos said. The Grizzlies will play their first home game at 7 p.m. Friday night when they host Marshfield. Ashland Boys Basketball Ashland's non-conference matchup Tuesday night at Redmond was postponed because of bad road conditions. The game will be made up Dec. 19.
