BOYS SOCCER Graham's spectacular goal highlights Ashland's fifth straight win Senior striker scores on bicycle kick in win over Marist By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 16, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 16, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2324,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> Ashland High boys soccer co-head coach Abdi Guled likes the way his star striker, Stenley Graham, can make the net wave with his powerful goals. On Thursday, Graham did it again. Upside down. Graham scored two goals, including a spectacular bicycle kick, and also had an assist as the Grizzlies continued to surge toward the postseason with their fifth win in a row, 5-1, over Marist at Ashland Middle School. Ashland junior Bryce Rollins added two goals and Leo Duetz two assists for the Grizzlies, who have a half-game lead over Springfield in the Midwestern League standings heading into the last week and a half of the regular season. The Grizzlies (8-2-1, 4-0 MWL) can clinch one of the league’s two automatic berths to the 16-team Class 5A state tournament with a win over Eagle Point on Tuesday. Marist (5-5-2, 2-2) needs to win its final two league games and get some help in order to avoid the play-in round. The Grizzlies and Spartans were in a back and forth battle until the 30th minute, when a senior-to-senior-to-senior connection produced what co-head coach Brad Roupp called one of the prettiest goals he’s ever seen. Aiden Locklin started the series by passing the ball ahead to Lars Filson, who lifted the ball into the box to Graham, whose perfectly-timed flip-n-kick gave Ashland a stunning 1-0 lead. Roupp tried to describe the finish. “It was a true, over-the-head, upside down, looking-backwards-toward-the-opposite-goal bicycle kick,” he said. “It was serious. The ball was coming in across the field at about eight feet in the air and Stenley just rose up and flipped over and drove it into the back of the net.” “Even the fans from Marist were like, ‘Wow,’” Guled said. The goal gave Ashland a huge momentum boost and the Grizzlies took advantage in the second half, scoring four goals to win going away. In the 48th, sophomore Jade Boucher scored unassisted on a pretty chip from about 25 yards out to make it 2-0. Twenty minutes later Rollins cut off a wayward shot by Graham and redirected into the goal to give the Grizzlies a 3-0 cushion. Graham notched his second goal in the 74th, volleying a nice pass from Duetz for another one-touch gem. One minute after Marist’s Demetre Markopoulos scored the Spartans’ only goal of the day in the 78th, Rollins got it back with a six-yard strike. Duetz assisted with a nice chip pass. Roupp said that Ashland put together a total team effort against the Spartans, with a few key standouts. “We had several players that really controlled play,” he said. “Jahnoi Hall is often not talked about but he is absolutely the glue that holds this group together. His play in the center is strong and he’s got such a good soccer mind on him. …And then Ian Rinefort actually sparked this thing in the second half. After a sluggish first half I moved Ian to center midfield and he attacked.” Roupp added that sophomore center-fullback Declan Hinkley also played well. The Grizzlies host Eagle Point on Tuesday before hitting the road to play Springfield on Oct. 24 in a game that could determine the MWL champion. “I think we’ll just take it one game at a time,” Guled said. “They’re having such a good time. So far, so good.” Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-821-0829 or [email protected].
