It’s produced with the Ashland Independent Film Festival. Joanne Feinberg is programmer.  "The Last Season" tells the story of a refugee and former Khmer Freedom Fighter, who fought the Khmer Rouge, became enslaved and had to learn to eat wild food, including mushrooms. He is part of a gathering of 200 such mushroom hunters each year in Chemult. “It’s the story of hunting the extremely expensive matsutake, but it has the global themes of friendship and healing,” says Feinberg. It’s in English. Sara Dosa directs. “World Film Week is a slate of international films filtered through the lens and programming eyes of AIFF, which is known for its spectacular programming,” says Feinberg, who chose all the films. While the AIFF in April emphasizes and seeks to draw and support American filmmakers, she adds, World Film Week pulls in the best movies of the rest of the world. Seven films have subtitles. “Expedition to the End of the World” is a Danish documentary about a voyage of a geologist, archaeologist, zoologist, geochemist, arts photographer, poet and two aging men who become friends and confront the meanings of death — and the lives they’ve lived. Scenery of the ocean around Greenland haunt the viewer, says Feinberg.  “Life Itself,” by Steve James (in English) details the life and legacy Roger Ebert, arguably the nation’s foremost film critic, the one to turn millions on to cinema and a higher level of understanding about it. He died last year of cancer that made him unable to speak, but he continued to do written reviews up to his passing. “Point and Shoot” is the work of Marshall Curry, a festival favorite who has had three earlier films on the WFW screen. It’s the story of a shy Baltimore youth who tours the Mideast on a motorcycle and ends up involved in the 2011 revolution against Libyan tyrant Gadaffi. He is captured and does half a year in solitary confinement. After his release and homecoming in America, he feels compelled to jump back in the fray in Libya. AIFF’s main fundraiser of the year will be held at 5:30 p.m. today, Oct. 4. The “Reel to Rogue” banquet at Peerless Restaurant & Gardens features dishes inspired by films from the festival by chef Joshua Katner. It includes a live auction of travel, adventure and dining packages, as well as a "Wine Grab" of 50 bottles of varying values. Trips include forays to Hawaii, Sayulita in Mexico, a Ducks football weekend, Bandon, Portland, an Ashland "stay-cation" and Rogue Valley wine tour. Featured guests of the evening are "The Last Season" director Dosa and local artist Gabriel Mark Lipper, who will unveil his AIFF15 poster art. Tickets are $75.
