The top-ranked and No. 2-seeded Foxes, led by the best defense in the state in terms of points allowed, eased into the state semifinals for the third year in a row behind their fourth shutout of the season and third in their last four games. They’ll play Midwestern League champion Springfield in the semifinals on Nov. 22. Ashland (8-3) was held to 134 yards of total offense, including 41 in the second half , and only once managed to drive beyond the Foxes’ 40-yard line. “They are the state’s leading defense for points allowed for a reason, but we missed some opportunities,” Ashland coach Charlie Hall said. “We had some guys that were open and we didn’t get the ball to them, and we had some protection issues. And, you can’t turn the ball over three or four times and expect to stay competitive.” The Foxes scored the only touchdown they would need on their opening drive when quarterback Cole Chandler hit Logan Munson in the corner of the end zone to cap a 49-yard drive with 7:35 to go in the opening quarter. The Grizzlies nearly got it right back. Kyle Weinberg’s 51-yard bomb to brother Nicky Weinberg gave Ashland a first down at the Silverton 9, but the Grizzlies spun their wheels from there and ended up falling five yards short on a fourth-down pass play. Ashland never threatened again. A week after passing for more than 300 yards against Hillsboro, Kyle Weinberg completed 9 of 21 passes for 86 yards and was picked off three times. Ashland’s running backs also struggled on the sloppy turf, as Silverton held the Grizzlies to 48 yards rushing on 23 carries. Silverton running back Sam Kuschnick, who rushed for 157 yards, scored on a 7-yard run with 2:51 to go in the first half to extend Silverton’s lead to 13-0. The Grizz defense held firm in the third quarter to keep the game reasonably competitive, but when Weinberg was sacked on fourth-and-5 at the Ashland 25 and Silverton scored its third touchdown five plays later, it was all but over. Chandler completed 9 of 19 passes for 113 yards, and Munson had four catches for 62 yards to lead the Foxes, who gained 219 of their 332 yards on the ground. Ashland’s defense had seven sacks and an interception by Max Montgomery. “We had some good moments this season, but even where we ended up it still felt like a certain level of underachievement because it felt like we could have done more,” Hall said. “The reason why we played Silverton is because we lost to Marist and Springfield, so we wanted to make a run but we couldn’t get a home playoff game. “That was a great milestone on the season to be hitting on all cylinders against Hillsboro (last week) and it’s so frustrating to not be able to transfer that over one week later.” Ashland 0  0  0  0 - 0 Silverton 7  7  0  14 - 28 S - Munson 15 pass from Chandler (Dahl kick) S - Kuschnick 7 run (Dahl kick) S - Chandler 2 run (Dahl kick) S - Chandler 1 run (Dahl kick) Prep Water Polo At Corvallis, Ashland High’s boys and girls teams both had their championship hopes dashed in the state semifinals Friday at Osborne Aquatic Center. The Ashland boys dropped a double-overtime thriller to Summit, 9-8, while the Ashland girls suffered a 19-8 setback to Madras. Both teams will play for third place today – the boys will face Marist and the girls Summit. The Grizzly boys were led by team captain Tristan Gavin, who had four goals, two assists and five steals. Luke Abell added two goals, Devon Lancaster one goal, one assist and two steals and goalie Vincent Wright 18 blocks. One of Wright’s saves came from only five meters away. Ashland and Summit were tied at 1 after one and at 2 at the half. Summit took a 3-2 lead into the fourth quarter, but after a flurry of goals the two teams went to overtime tied at 6. Ashland’s girls were led by Sabrina Scoggins, who had three goals, three assists and seven steals. Amelia Zeve added two goals, one assist and four streals, Leilani Suckles two goals, one assist and three steals and goalie Kyilyn Boehm 11 blocks. Men’s Basketball At Fullerton, Calif., Hope International, the 10th-ranked team in NAIA Division I, pulled away in the second half for a 70-55 victory over Southern Oregon, the 17th-ranked NAIA Division II team, on Friday. Eric Thompson scored 20 points to lead the Raiders (3-1), while Tim Weber added 15 points and Jordan West 12.
