Basin 11-12, 9-10 all-star teams both advance By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Ashland’s 11-12-year-old all-star team stormed out of the gate by scoring 10 runs in the first inning en route to a 11-0 pool play victory over Klamath Basin in the District 6 all-star tournament Monday at Hunter Park. The resounding victory improved Ashland to 3-0 heading into tonight’s semifinal round, which will pit Ashland against South Suburban and Medford American Red against Medford American Blue. Medford American Red is also undefeated through pool play after beating South Suburban 7-5 Monday. Ashland, which entered Monday’s game having already clinched the No. 1 seed out of its pool, cranked seven of its 12 hits in the first inning to jump out on top. “We came out smoking tonight,” Ashland coach Steve Dodds said. “They just couldn’t get us out and we just hit the ball hard everywhere.” Outfielder Wes Hitchko, pitcher/first baseman Zach Mora and outfielder Micah Ashburn had two hits apiece to lead Ashland’s charge, while second baseman Billy Hansen and catcher Jake Scarminach each hit a double. Mora pitched four strong innings, striking out six and walking one while only allowing one hit. Brady Thomas pitched one inning of relief for Ashland. Tonight’s semifinal games begin at 6 p.m. at Hunter Park, with the winners advancing to Wednesday night’s championship game, also at 6 p.m. The teams are playing for a chance to represent District 6 in the state tournament, which begins July 22 in Alpenrose Stadium in Portland. 9-10 all-stars At Talent, William Crowley pitched a six-inning, one-hit shutout and Jamie Flynn batted 2-for-3 with a solo inside-the-park home run and three RBIs as Ashland beat Phoenix-Talent 5-0 in the District 6 Little League semifinals on Monday. The victory advances Ashland to tonight’s championship game against Klamath Basin, which beat South Suburban Blue 8-7 in the other semifinal game. Crowley struck out eight and walked one, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced plus the last six in a dominating performance. Ashland scored two runs in the third on Flynn’s single to center. Flynn advanced all the way to third after a Phoenix-Talent error, but was left stranded. Ashland added another run in the fourth when Ryan Bottimore drew a bases-loaded walk. In the fifth, Flynn led off with a blast into right-center field that skipped past the outfielders and toward the fence. He streaked around the bases and slid into home for the team’s first home run of the postseason. Ashland added one more insurance run in the inning to complete the scoring. Since its opening-day loss to Medford American Blue, Ashland has outscored its three opponents by a combined score of 25-7. Ashland and Klamath Basin play at 6 p.m. tonight at the Talent Little League field. The winner will advance to the state tournament, which begins July 22 at Redmond.
