COLLEGE WRESTLING Under SOU spotlight one last time Raiders face Pacific in final home match for seniors Comment By SOU Sports Information DailyTidings.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Feb. 12, 2015 @ 5:15 pm By SOU Sports Information Posted Feb. 12, 2015 @ 5:15 pm » Social News One of the most talented senior classes in Southern Oregon University wrestling history is ready to give it one more go at Bob Riehm Arena. The second-ranked Raiders host in-state rival Pacific University at 7 p.m. today in the final dual of the 2014-15 season, which will also serve as SOU's last tune-up before the NAIA Western Region Qualifying Tournament on Feb. 21 in Havre, Mont. Before the dual, SOU head coach Mike Ritchey will recognize 10 seniors, five of whom have already been NAIA All-Americans – Jacob Abrams, Clayton Burtis, Brock Gutches, Taylor Johnson and Dalton Urrutia. Those five will each be in the lineup against the Boxers, while seniors Brock Crocker, Coleman Johns and Cody Jones will all wrestle exhibitions at the conclusion of the dual for chances to make SOU's 12-person team going to the Western qualifier. "That's a large class to replace, both in quantity and quality," Ritchey said. "The void left by these guys is going to be pretty huge emotionally and physically. They all started in different spots, from quite a few homegrown boys to NCAA Division I transfers to junior college transfers, but hopefully it's a road map to success. I know how bad they want to finish their careers the right way." At 13-2, SOU already has more dual wins than in any season since it went 15-7 in 2009-10. Rankings: The first NAIA coaches' poll since Dec. 31 was released on Wednesday, revealing that the Raiders are exactly where they've been for the duration of the season – No. 2, behind three-time defending champ Grand View (Iowa). Great Falls (Mont.) moved up two spots to No. 3, swapping positions with Montana State-Northern. Individually, the stock of two Raiders went up: Garrett Urrutia jumped six spots to No. 9 at 165, and Taylor Johnson moved from No. 2 to take over the top spot for the first time this season at 197. The next poll will be released following the regional qualifying tournaments. Dual-y noted: • Gutches, the three-time NAIA defending champion, is now 9-0 with in dual action with seven pins in eight contests. He's coming off a title run at the California Collegiate Open, where he was given the Dr. Northrup Award for outstanding wrestler. • Johnson has won 10 straight dual matchups, including seven by fall. He's 11-1 in duals with his only loss coming at Oregon State. • Dalton Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) has upped his record to 12-1 with 11 straight wins, including seven that had bonus points attached. He was SOU's other California Collegiate Open champion. • Garrett Urrutia (Lebanon, Ore./Lebanon) is 9-3 in duals with four bonus-point victories. • Devin Poppen (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City) had his dual winning streak of 12 snapped in his most recent outing at Menlo but is still 13-2 with nine pins among 11 bonus-point wins. • Tyler Cowger (Sweet Home, Ore./Sweet Home) has won 11 of his last 12 dual outings. He's 11-3 with four wins by fall. • Clayton Burtis (Colton, Ore./Colton) is 10-5 in duals after having started 0-3. About Pacific : The Raiders won at Pacific, 50-3, on Jan. 15. They're 54-6 in the all-time series, which has seen the programs meet in each of the last 41 seasons. The Boxers will forfeit the 125- and 165-pound classes, but have feature wrestlers at 133 and 174 in Eric Harder (23-10) and Tyler Howe (16-9). Howe kept the Boxers from getting shut out the first time the teams met. "I think it's good for both programs to see each other twice because there's a lot of history," Ritchey said. "I'm sure they want these kinds of matches to prepare for their regional tournament, and the thing about them is they're always tough to wrestle. They're well-coached and going to give you a good fight. They're just a little young right now."
