Now, 15 years later, Black Friday has oozed its way into Thanksgiving Day itself, with many stores feeling compelled to open their doors to bargain-seeking shoppers on the family-centered holiday. Ashland's Abundance Swap, which features local folks exchanging gift items for no monetary consideration, went off as usual Sunday. A couple hundred people milled about the Historic Ashland Armory, perusing tables of cast-off items and sharing the warmth of the season. Meanwhile, it appears Golden's reaction to commercializing the holidays has been spreading — and at least some retailers have taken notice. This year, a number of major chain stores bucked the trend of doing business on Thanksgiving Day. They included Costco, T.J. Maxx, Staples, PetSmart and Home Depot, just to name a few with a presence in the Rogue Valley. And REI, the Northwest-based outdoor store, did them all one better and stayed closed on Black Friday as well. That's encouraging, although it's a very small step. Many big-box retailers still opened on Thanksgiving, and as long as visions of once-a-year price cuts lure droves of shoppers, they will continue to do so. If this upsets you, push back by buying gifts from local businesses, where more of each dollar will stay here to support the local economy. And don't overlook local artists, artisans and musicians, who also rely on the patronage of their friends and neighbors.
