OUR VIEW Our View: Going for the gold Comment DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Ashland High School debaters Rob Stallman and Gillian Mullane and two teammates from North Bend and Corvallis put Oregon on the public speaking map last week when they made it all the way to the final round of the USA World Schools Speech and Debate Invitational in Dallas, Texas.  In all, six Ashland High School students competed in Dallas. The South Oregon team, made up of Stallman, Mullane, Sravya Tadepalli from Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis and Lorien Deyo of North Bend High School, fell short of winning the national title, but their second-place finish was still a triumph. For one thing, the team had to compete in World Schools Debate, a new format they learned on the fly. For another, the final round was held in a large ballroom at the Dallas Sheraton before an audience of 2,000 — a far cry from the more intimate settings the speakers were accustomed to. The South Oregon team was selected by debate coaches from the region based on their performances at tournaments held during the school year and for their qualities of hard work and cooperation. The coaches' confidence clearly paid off, as the four made their way through the preliminary rounds to reach the final. The format tested not only their debating skills but also their poise and rhetorical style — another challenge the Oregon students hadn't encountered before. Look for these students to continue to do outstanding work as they move on with their studies and competitive speaking.    DailyTidings.com Writer Posted Jun. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox.
