Gerberding warned America that obesity is catching up to tobacco as the leading cause of death in America. Obesity is a precursor to diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. At the current rate, the annual obesity death toll is expected to surpass 500,000 deaths annually, rivaling cancer deaths. Thus, it seems only fitting that the Great American Meatout observance should surpass the Great American Smokeout in the number of local events and media coverage. Indeed, the current Meatout Web site (meatout.org) lists nearly a thousand educational events in 50 states and 20 other countries. At each event, volunteers asked their neighbors to kick the meat habit on March 20 (first day of spring) and explore a plant-based diet. Ten cities are hosting hundreds of billboards and bus cards carrying the Meatout message. Thirty governors and mayors are issuing special proclamations encouraging their citizens to explore a wholesome diet of whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruits. The times they're a changing. Allen Thiel Ashland We need to help protect the seals I am voicing my strong opposition to the up coming annual slaughter of 350,000 baby harp and hood seals off the east coast of Canada. Yes, Canada is still clubbing baby seals to death each spring. We haven't been hearing or seeing the gruesome pictures of baby seals clubbed to death because Canada has restricted access to the nursery ice floes to anybody but the assailants. The Canadian government has also passed laws that make it illegal to film the killing or to interfere with the killing. The Canadian government insists that the seals must die so that the cod population can increase. It is common knowledge that the cod have been drastically over fished. When the first Europeans landed on the east coast of Canada there where more than five times the number of seals there are today and the cod population was more than abundant. Give the cod time and they will recuperate. Paying the cod fisherman to slaughter the seal population is not the answer. I will be boycotting Canadian products and refuse to visit Canada as a tourist destination until they stop this senseless, brutal slaughter of seals. Tom Peil Ashland Report on Cancer Vaccine misleading As physicians involved in the care of cancer patients, we are poignantly aware of the devastating effects that patients experience when their hopes are raised by false promises of cure, and then shattered by the harsh reality of cancer progression. The Mail Tribune article, published in the Sunday edition on 1/18/04 and distributed to readers of the Ashland Daily Tidings, reflected incomplete reporting on the anti-cancer vaccine therapy being done in Buenos Aires, Argentina by Gustavo Movligia, MD. One of the authors of this letter (JC) spent five months at the Regina Mater Clinic in 2003 for cancer treatment. During this time, she monitored the courses of approximately 20 other patients being treated there. At present, more than 75 percent of these patients have lost their lives due to cancer progression or due to the side effects of the vaccine therapy. Clearly, a thorough view of this treatment with objective data about response rates and survival times is mandatory so that patients do not expend valuable time and funds on an unproven therapy.
