But even if that doesn’t happen, McDermott is confident that Southern Oregon’s ticket to nationals was locked up the moment the Raiders frolicked off Bart Valentine Court on Saturday in Portland with an 81-66 victory over 15th-ranked Warner Pacific, and possibly before. “We’re in,” McDermott said. “The only way we could get knocked out is if they dropped us in the (top 25) poll, and there’s no way that could happen. They can’t do that. You can’t drop a team that’s playing for a conference championship.” Which should diffuse some of the pressure when the Raiders and Coyotes tip-off at 6 p.m. Pacific time at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center in Caldwell, Idaho. “I think it’ll be quite a bit looser,” McDermott said. “You can just go out and play hard and have some fun.” “Fun” is a good way to describe Southern Oregon’s postseason experience so far. The Raiders’ national tourney hopes were hanging by a thread when they trailed Northwest Christian by seven points with 2 minutes, 22 seconds to go in overtime during a first-round game Wednesday, but they fought back to force double overtime and won 98-92. Then on Saturday, against a Warner Pacific team that won the last head-to-head meeting in Portland by 38 points, SOU torched the league’s best defense by shooting 57 percent en route to a stunning 81-66 victory. Now Southern Oregon (24-8) has a chance to do something it hasn’t done since the Shea Washington era and head to Point Lookout, Mo., site of the 32-team national tournament, with some momentum. A win over the Coyotes would also provide the Raiders a bump in the rankings and a better draw at nationals — the NAIA will reveal the bracket Wednesday afternoon. The Coyotes (27-5) enter the championship game with some momentum of their own, having won six of their last seven, including playoff victories over Oregon Tech and Eastern Oregon. They finished in a three-way tie for first place in the Cascade but came out ahead in the league’s tie-breaker formula to snare the league’s first automatic berth to nationals. College of Idaho is equipped with the most balanced, experienced (seven seniors) roster in the Cascade Conference. Five Coyotes are scoring in double figures, led by senior guard Demetrius Perkins (14.3 points per game), and senior wing Sydney Donaldson was last season’s CCC defensive player of the year. The Yotes have no glaring weaknesses, defensively or offensively. They lead the conference in points per game (80.1), rank third in scoring defense (69.1), and are No. 1 in rebounds per game (43.9), blocked shots (175) and assists (18.7 per game). “They are extremely balanced,” McDermott said of C of I. “And they do have a really good inside-outside game. They have really good depth, too. They just have all the pieces, and they’re experienced.” The two teams split the season series, with each team winning on its home court. The Coyotes won the last meeting 80-72 on Jan. 23, overcoming a seven-point second-half deficit. Senior post Eric Thompson led the Raiders that night with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Jordan West added 16 points and Tim Weber eight points, seven assists and two blocks. For the Coyotes, Joey Nebeker had 19 points and 10 boards, Josh Wilson 15 points and eight rebounds and Perkins eight points, eight assists and eight rebounds. McDermott said the Coyotes love to push the tempo and will be looking to do so again tonight. In the last meeting, C of I outscored SOU in fastbreak points 14-4. “The biggest thing for us is transition defense,” McDermott said. “We have to get back in transition and if we don’t, we’re in trouble. They’re very athletic and they finish well. And, they operate way better in that situation than they do in the halfcourt against our zone.” When the Raiders have the ball, the Coyotes will rely on their physical man-to-man defense to slow down SOU’s motion offense, one of the most efficient in the nation — the Raiders’ 50.7 field-goal percentage ranks first in the conference and fifth nationally. McDermott expects the Coyotes to do anything they can to disrupt the Raiders’ rhythm. “They’re trying, against our motion, to ride us off screens,” he said, “and we hope that the officials see that that might be a little bit illegal.” Joe Zavala can be reached at 541-821-0829 or [email protected].
