As a member of the governing bodies of both Ashland Contemporary Theatre and the Playwright Atelier, I've been part of many discussions about the need for a performance space and what to do about it. ACT has searched for years for a building with commercial zoning that can be converted and permitted for assembly. Since these costs are greater than one company can assume alone, the solution is the creation of a Community Performing Arts Center: an auditorium with one or two rehearsal spaces. The shared venue would be affordable to Ashland's off-Bardway theatrical and dance groups: ACT, Ashland New Plays Festival, Ashland Children's Theatre, Oregon Stage Works, Dancing People Co. and others. Perhaps concerts by not-for-profit music such as St. Clair Productions and the Siskiyou Violins. Representatives from several of these groups are already talking about pooling their energies in the search for a venue. I offer my services as a real estate agent toward finding a location. As soon as a steering committee is formed, we will announce to the public how to get involved. Let's make this happen, Ashland! Joseph Suste Medford No self serve Self serve gas? No thanks! If you think gas stations pass along the savings with self serve, and if you think getting rid of 10,000 station employees is a good thing and if you think some idiot with a butt sticking out of his mouth pumping his own gas won't blow you up and if you think it's easy sliding your card (Want a car wash? Join our club? Enter zip code — want a receipt? etc.) Get a grip! Now picture the weather: It's 95 degrees or it's a freezing blizzard, how nice to have someone pump your gas or wash your windshield if you ask. The push for self serves is corporate driven. The young people pumping you gas get minimum wage and need the job. Our population is aging. Nana and Pop Pop need a bit of help at the gas pump. Don't be selfish, don't put 10,000 young people out of work, don't blow us up just to save maybe 20 cents or 20 seconds. Did I mention gas prices are cheaper in Oregon than Washington or California? Don't forget to tip your attendant when they go the extra mile. Ron Boutwell Ashland Do what they expect When a body is discovered in good health but with a bullet in the brain, a coroner connecting the dots will infer that the bullet, not natural causes, was responsible. Just because people have died before, we do not ignore obvious evidence pointing to a non-natural cause of death. Climate science has predicted global warming will cause reduced snowpack and soil moisture leading to drought and wildfires, and climate chaos. These are what we see. Rationally connecting the dots should lead to the conclusion that global warming is probably the cause. Even fossil fuel corporations are now acknowledging that global warming is happening and greenhouse gas emissions are the primary cause. Both Shell Oil and BP, for example, have acknowledged that greenhouse gas emissions from burning their product are driving global warming, and that government action is necessary to address this problem. They are also, however, committed to continuing the extraction and marketing of their product, knowing this risks the livability of our planet for future generations.
