SOU Music Department to present High School Honor Band concert The Southern Oregon University Department of Music will present the High School Honor Band concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 26 in the SOU Music Recital Hall with featured conductor Dr. Allan McMur-ray. The concert is a culmination of a weekend-long workshop for the top high school students in Southern Oregon and will include Shostakovich's "Folk Dances," John Barnes Chance's "Variations on a Korean Folk Song" and Frank Ticheli's, "An American Elegy". Throughout the weekend Dr. McMurray, along with SOU Band Director Dr. Cynthia Hutton, will guide students in instrument technique, performance practices and musicianship. Geared for all ages, this concert will be a great introduction to the concert band repertoire. McMurray is professor of music, chair of the conducting faculty and director of bands at the University of Colorado; a position he has held for 24 years. At the university, he has premiered numerous works for wind ensemble and has earned praise from such notable composers as George Crumb, John Harbison, Steven Stucky, Michael Colgrass, Joseph Schwantner and Warren Benson for his expressive interpretations of their works. Cynthia Hutton is an associate professor of music and is in her ninth year as director of band activities at Southern Oregon University. In addition to these responsibilities, she is the conductor and artistic director of the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon Association and is active throughout Oregon as a guest clinician and conductor.
