City employees and volunteers are practicing how to react in the event a large earthquake hits the region. It's all part of the "Cascadia Rising" exercise, a multi-state effort intended to give an opportunity to practice response to the greatest natural disaster threat to the Pacific Northwest: an earthquake caused by a shift in the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coast of Northern California, Oregon and Washington. The premise, according to a city press release, is that the Ashland area has experienced a magnitude 6.8 earthquake overnight, as has the rest of the Pacific Northwest. Neither electric power nor natural gas are available, and water and sewer lines are being assessed. And the majority of the unreinforced masonry buildings in the downtown core have collapsed or sustained significant damage. The exercise is due to run from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 9. Employees and volunteers will participate in field operations and activate department operations centers, including the emergency operations center in the Council Chambers at 1175 East Main St. The intent of the exercise is to test the City’s resources and response during a large scale, regional earthquake by simulating events of a real-life disaster.
