Hummel notified the school board of his intention to resign on Wednesday. Hummel began overseeing district operations in July 2013 after a two-year search for a successor for Juli Di Chiro, who retired after 13 years with the district. In its announcement, the Ashland School Board expressed its appreciation for Hummel’s "hard work and dedication," and wished him the best in his future endeavors. Board Chairman Jim Westrick said Hummel’s relatively short time with the district could be characterized by "a focus on supporting teachers to continually improve their instructional skills, flattening leadership structures and ensuring operational efficiency." In an email to district staff, Hummel said it was with mixed emotions that he was leaving the district and that his reasons were "entirely personal." He wrote that he "is proud of the work that they have accomplished together" and wished them all "nothing but the best." "We all agree he has put the district on a great path and his three-year tenure has been very productive," district Director John Williams told the Tidings. "We will collaborate with the community on a search for his replacement."
