Editorial: Six caring, qualified candidates Six Ashland stalwarts have placed themselves in the crosshairs of a state budget crisis by running for the Ashland School Board, and that fact alone should warm the hearts of every parent, student, teacher and staff member in this city. It's hard to imagine jumping in front this train, but they did. Howard Braham, Jason Houk, Bob Kuenzel, Sheryl Lipski, Heidi Parker and Ellie Thivierge - we salute you. As far as an endorsement, forget it. We've found it impossible to put one candidate ahead of the other this year. To say one person is better than the next, that one person cares more about students - even that one person would be better qualified - it's hopeless. Each of the six candidates brings something special to this spring election, from experience to the view that things can be done differently. There is no shortage of opinions from readers, as we've seen on these Opinion pages over the past several weeks. For us to say only a portion of these heartfelt comments are right would be presumptuous. Instead, we expect voters to elect the best persons for the job to the two open seats - positions 2 and 5. With the Ashland Youth Activities Levy on the May 20 ballot - remember the levy's final fate rests on turnout - we're excited to welcome the new board-elects on May 21, and we pledge to give them our support as they enter a difficult but potentially rewarding period of public service.
